Tested: 2023 Genesis GV60 is like at first glance (2023)

UPDATE 08.07.22:This test report has been updated with test results for a performance AWD model.

Before I let you in, thatGenesis GV60Look deep into your eyes. Don't get too excited, his gaze isn't romantic. A small camera on the B-pillar provides a view and then opens the doors. Once inside, there's more to discover, because you touch a fingerprint recognition button on the center console to start. However, since the car is electric, it doesn't actually start anything.

The GV60 isGenesisfirst PU With no engine roaring, the telltale sign you've started the GV60 is the glass ball in the center console spinning, revealing a gearshift. It's a novel design and we're hoping to expand it to the rest of the Genesis range soon. As with the other Genesis models, the interior looks clean and tidy. A pane of glass as wide as the Mississippi River houses two 12.3-inch screens: displays directly in front of the driver and a central touchscreen. Unfortunately, phone mirroring (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) requires a cable, even as wireless systems become the norm, one of the GV60's few missteps.

HIGHLIGHTS: Really fast in the performance version, quiet and beautifully finished cabin, fast reload times

Based on the E-GMP architecture, a dedicated EV platform shared with theLet's do EV6jHyundai Ioniq 5The GV60 comes in a sleek and attractive crossover form. A convertible top hides a small storage area up front, and behind the second row is 24 cubic feet of space, enough for a full load of luggage. The brand's signature split headlight design makes an appearance, as does the winged emblem, although it's slimmer and less conspicuous than other models. Two versions will be available at launch, both with four-wheel drive and dual motors: the Advanced AWD model has a total output of 314 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque, while the Performance AWD model offers 429 horsepower and 446 pound-feet. Feet of torque with a short "burst" of 483 horses and 516 pound-feet available for 10 seconds of nonsense.

From our time with the more powerful Performance spec, we can report that the front motor momentarily overwhelms the front tires from a standing start with overboost turned on, although it also drives the rear wheels. The sprint to 60 mph takes just 3.7 seconds, and the quarter mile goes by in 12.2 seconds at 112 mph.

Take a few corners and the GV60 corners with confidence and is zippy thanks to its quick steering. An electronic limited-slip differential in the rear ensures power flows to both sides of the road, and front-to-rear torque distribution provides rear-wheel drive. However, the harder you push, the more insecure you become about the curb weight of 4,862 pounds, when the 21-inch Michelin Primacy Tour A/S tires begin to audibly protest. Our test car had just 0.83g of grip around the skid plate and took 180 feet to come to a stop from 70mph, reasonable but unexciting numbers. An adjustable multi-stage regeneration system that allows single-pedal riding keeps the brakes from feeling too strong. The body control is good, the handling as wellPorsche Macan- Like, except the Genesis doesn't work with downshifts and upshifts, it just works.

LOWS: Mediocre grip level, narrow rear seat, phone mirroring still requires a cable.

Quiet and refined, the GV60 is a compelling luxury vehicle when you drive it with ease. A camera-based system scanning the road ahead ensures the adaptive dampers stay supple over bumps. However, we did notice some instability at the rear during hard cornering on rough tarmac. But that may be because your camera couldn't see the road surface clearly. Turn off the ridicule and the headachesupersonicSound effects that hum and hum in response to throttle position and there are several to choose from, and there's near silence thanks to the lack of road and wind noise. Some credit perhaps goes to the eight-microphone active noise-cancellation system, which is played through the audio system's 17 speakers. Whether it's noise-cancellation, soundproofing or an aero package, the GV60 is a quiet machine, registering just 64 decibels in the cabin at 70 mph. Even at full throttle, this Genesis is extremely quiet.

A 77.4 kWh battery provides an EPA range of 248 miles (Advanced) or 235 miles (Performance); We were able to get an impressive 200 miles of range out of our test car on our freeway stretch at 120 km/h. A Level 2 charger will charge the battery from 10 to 100 percent in about seven hours. Plug it into an 800-volt DC fast charger and the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. The Advanced AWD model starts at $59,985, about $11,000 more than the same powertrain in the Hyundai Ioniq 5, but less than $4,000 more than that car's limited-edition top-of-the-line model. The performance AWD variant starts at $68,985, which might seem like a lot for a compact SUV. But from its strong acceleration to its refinement and beautifully designed interior, the GV60 is easy to appreciate.
