Fifteen years ago, the American public was introduced to Marshall Mathers, Eminem, and Slim Shady, a triptych of insane personalities whose interests included building hell, making enemies, and driving ten-inch nails through each eyelid . To honor Shady's worldwide release, we decided to rank every song Em has released to date. But first, let's clarify our countdown with some eligibility requirements: We only recorded songs that have been officially released commercially, meaning tracks that will appear on studio albums, EPs, and compilations, as well as guest verses; We don't look at unofficial mixtapes or freestyles, so our sincere apologies to "Nail in the Coffin," "Til Hell Freezes Over," and other notable rarities. Parodies were also not considered (sympathy to all fans of Ken Kaniff and Steve Berman). Obviously, we only considered tracks from D12 that contained an Eminem verse or hook. And finally, when there were multiple versions of a track, we chose to record the version that we felt was better. So don't expect to see the live Grammy performance of The Slim Shady's "Stan" or "Just the Two of Us" EP. . And so we start the Eminem show... 289. The Monsters” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHkozMIXZ8w) feat. Rihanna (The Marshall Mathers LP 2, 2013) Eminem's tried-and-true tactic of hiring a pop star to sing a hook pays off here. As this MMLP2 juggernaut bursts into her chorus, Rihanna's sweet yodeling brings a happy vibe to an otherwise overcooked track. And Em's speech, for her part, maintains a confrontational tone but never comes across as intrusive; After all, this one was built to conquer the charts. KM 112. 99. "Rock City" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtSuBYjC_VQ) (Royce da 5'9" feat. Eminem, Rock City [Version 2.0], 2002) Recorded as rising tensions between Royce da 5'9" and D12 turned into an uphill battle, "Rock City" almost didn't happen. G-Unit operative Red Spyda offers Dre a sinister approach while Royce takes the blame, denying a verse from Em, who instead resuming work with D12 after Royce stepped down from his hype spot mid-tour C.J. 98. "Calm Down" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y5J3VUC9qM) (Busta Rhymes feat . Eminem, single "Calm Down", 2014) The latest single from Busta Rhymes' forthcoming ELE 2 is a friendly duel between two lyrical titans that took weeks to record, each time one heard the other's verse still once went back and revised his own, the end result shot up to six minutes of miserable war. If there's a winner, it's the listener. CJ 97. "Stir Crazy" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrX1aaCDIjk) (The Madd Rapper feat. Eminem, Tell 'Em Why U Madd, 2000) "I'm crazy about this razor / " I'm crazy with that razor," Eminem yells in this gorgeous 2000 song, a prime example of lyrical chiasmus. "Crazy" is one of Em's more dated verses, but it's a first glimpse of his enduring vitality. (Plus, Kanye's production is great.) Chr. 96. "The Conspiracy (Freestyle)" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIISR1YNnQ) feat. 50 Cent (Straight From the Lab, 2003) Eminem's feud with Raymond "Benzino" Scott, rapper, record executive, star of Love & HipHop: Atlanta and former owner of The Source, produced several conflicting leads on both sides, including that of Em. "The Conspiracy," a syllable-drunk (and sometimes nonsensical) freestyle fueled by DJ Green Lantern's pogo production. Suddenly, Mr. Mathers dismisses the notion that his career is in decline and pounces on the dwindling page count of The Source, the hit 50 Cent, the foreign policy of George W. Bush, and back again. His own mastery of hip-hop. , all in less than three minutes. KM 95. "Bad Guy" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71xeMTazmMo) (The Marshall Mathers LP 2, 2013) "Bad Guy" picks up where its predecessor "Stan" left off The Suicidal Eminem fan's brother mourns his loss while plotting revenge on the man he's carrying
Feelings of guilt over his family's crisis. But in the song's final moments, we see Matthew Mitchell as more than just a disgruntled killer. They think of a career whose core is insult and hostility. CJ 94. "Can-I-Bitch" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_biz8j5ACJ8) (Straight From the Lab, 2003) Another product of another feud, this time involving a Jamaican-born wrestler. Rap warrior Canibus: "Can-I-Bitch" isn't Eminem's smartest attacking track, nor is it his best-produced, but it's one of his densest and funniest, a foul-mouthed story that would blow anyone's mind. KM 93. "Keep Talkin' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQq_cfLV36U) (D12, D12 World, 2004) "Keep Talkin's" Greatest Strength: The closing track from the older studio album. current from D12, The D12 World from 2004 (!) is his build. Holding back, Eminem decides to talk shit on a competent (albeit easily forgettable) hook that serves as the song's lyric line, making room for his bullet-spitting bandmates via a tight, wrist-breaking loop. KM 92. "Amityville" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntmPioImGvQ) (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) In this deep cut from the Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem and Bizarre trade horrorcore until the third verse Shlock from opens the headline with the conceit that his native Detroit is just as harsh and dangerous as the haunted house that inspired the supernatural horror classic of the same name. CJ 91. "Hellbound" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqfDeLxPY_Y) (Masta Ace feat. Eminem and J-Black, Game Over, 2000) choices ("I'm not a fucking G/I "I am a cannibal"), recites some of his vices ("Coke and Acid / Black Magic / Cloaks and Daggers") and realizes fuck it, he's going to hell anyway. This one also gets bonus points for sampling the soundtrack to another classic artifact from the Y2K era: SoulCalibur from the Sega Dreamcast. KM 90. "Bump Heads" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOVcWiKoX9c) feat. 50 Cent, Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks (Straight From the Lab, 2003) Do you want to remember what it was like to live in 2003? Well, nothing gets the job done better than a diss track aimed at Ja Rule. The rubbery beat serves as the perfect catalyst for Shady's relentless rants on Yes, such as, "We have undercover officers who are going to legally kill you." Don't cross Em unless you're fine. Chr.
89. "Girls (Limp Bizkit Diss)" (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=8RWDXrmczug) (D12, Devil's Night, 2001) Hidden as a hidden track on D12's debut album Girls (Limp Bizkit). )" Goals... who else? - Limp Bizkit, especially for appearing as a friend of another Eminem target, Everlast. "Now I need to find my blacklist and add some new enemies," Em says, quietly annoyed by a lullaby-like arrangement. Fred Durst and his boys never stood a chance. KM 88. "Lady" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9JEzGcXGC0) (Obie Trice feat. Eminem, Cheers, 2003) Eminem's first verse to this song - a punchy climax applause from Obie Trice's debut album begins: "I'm internationally known, baby / But really, there are few people who know what I look like naturally." That probably remains to this day, but at least "Lady" gives listeners a glimpse of Marshall Mathers as a man : a socialite who craves privacy but likes to be in the spotlight, a guy prone to jealousy and attacks who shrugs while rapping, “I guess it's about doing this to other people 87. "Forever" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOEvBlNI-wc) (Drake feat. Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem, Relapse: Refill, 2009) Posse performs with the biggest names The game is very unpredictable. There can be a bunch of big egos trying to rhyme with each other for purely selfish reasons, or there's "Forever," in which Drake, Eminem, Lil Wayne, and Kanye push each other to get better. "They've been patiently waiting for Pinocchio to stick his nose out and get back in the game," Em raps with the confidence of a man ten years his junior. "Forever" was her "I can still dance with the puppies" moment, and it worked. 86. "Don't Front" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4YTWsD8ncE) feat. Buckshot (The Marshall Mathers LP 2 [Call of Duty: Ghosts Bonus], 2013) If you managed to copy last year's MMLP2/Call of Duty: Ghosts plugin pack, you were in for a real treat. On the bonus track, "Don't Front," Marshall proves his underground credentials in a gritty boom-bap production that samples "I Got Cha Opin" by '90s hip-hop legends Black Moon and the group's leader contains. Buckshot in the chorus. CJ 85. "My Fault" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLasGrzdGh0) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) Slim Shady LP chronicles Em's dealings with "Susan, a former heroin addict who she's just "Using" quickly goes insane: he gives her a dose of mushrooms
It distracts her from her opiate cravings, she loses her mind, and they both spend the rest of the night trying (and ultimately failing) to keep her from harming themselves. CJ 84. "No One's Iller" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mln6wDp32qc) feat. Swifty McVay, Bizarre, and Fuzz (The Slim Shady EP, 1997) Years before Kanye West sampled Hank Crawford's "Wildflower" (which is itself a cover of a Song (originally by Canadian band Skylark) for their late hit record "Drive Slow" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWoUCDTfWqA) Eminem made the 1973 song an accomplice to It's relaxed and Bloody Drenched In Kleine Bragging KM 83. "Love Me" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekb-KL8SrBw) feat. 50 Cent and Obie Trice (music by and inspired by the film 8 Mile, 2002) As this one By the time misty thugs showed up, Eminem had already built his empire: millions of records sold, a starring role in his own quasi-biographical film, a handful of Grammy awards and soon to be an Oscar.Em was so untouchable back then: "Love Me" isn't even that 2nd or 3rd best song on the 8 Mile soundtrack and yet gripping Damn it doesn't even have the strongest verse; This track is owned by 50 Cent, who randomly skewers R. Kelly, Lil Kim, Lauryn Hill and D'Angelo in the track's closing moments. But even if we start with Obie Trice and end at 50, Eminem is in the middle, flanked by two of his best lieutenants. KM 82. "Underground" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7slvvQ0Cbzo) (Relapse, 2009) Eminem dove deep into the realm for his comeback album, 2009's unjustly maligned Relapse of the horror core. When he's not urging him to get us all to break a bottle, he tells brutal tales of child abuse, cannibalism and premeditated murder. But on the LP's closing track, "Underground," the violence turns into muddy fanfiction as Em arms himself with a strobe beat and takes on Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Hannibal Lecter. In this case, the last gasp of Eminem's darkest record: the lower the stakes, the better. KM 81. "So Far..." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNn5CyPF3bE) (The Marshall Mathers LP 2, 2013) MMLP2 album cut "So Far..." repeats sometime -Eagle- guitarist Joe Walsh plays the late '70s blues hit "Life's Been Good," while Marshall strings together a series of humorous tunes
Observations on life as a mid-forties, as a parent, and as a recovering addict. He's charming, mature and honest in many places where MMLP2 prefers escapist and youthful. CJ 80. "Fight Music" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pVfBW6N7QA) (D12, Devil's Night, 2001) Eminem is known to be evasive of the negative behavior his critics assume his music inspires him inspired, and this denial of it is both the catalyst for much of his best work and one of his greatest weaknesses. D12's single "Fight Music" oddly ranks in his discography as a moment when he owns her and tries to stir up a riot. CJ 79. "Stay Wide Awake" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXLsVLlbyb4) (Relapse, 2009) Em lets loose his role as a serial killer and his questionable accent in this haunting highlight of relapse, stalking and more Lauf He attacks his victims, proudly compares himself to Ted Bundy, and warns of an eerie, smothered clue: Stay wide awake, or else. K. M. 78. "Cinderella Man" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= MyQ900jLr3I) (Recovery, 2010) The deep recovery cut "Cinderella Man" introduces Em as the returning child in Russell Crowe's 2005 drama boxing of the same name, while also offering a brief reappraisal of Relapse ("Fuck my last CD, that shit's in the trash") and the promise to never let his fans down again. CJ 77. "Nuttin' To Do" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvvSELOQRts) (Bad Meets Evil, single "Nuttin' To Do", 1999) Not Eminem's and Royce's first song since 5' 9" recorded together, but "Nuttin' To Do" was their first single as "Bad Meets Evil," and as such it's a slow distillation of the duo's impeccable chemistry and bodes well for more, or, err, nasty things to come KM 76. "Elevator" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0DIkqJJ4KY) (Relapse: Refill, 2009) This holdover from Relapse, included in this album's bonus. Complete: filler reissue, it has a real rarity: a half-sung Eminem hook that works. And the chorus, in which Marshall recalls his younger self laughing at the idea of ever going platinum, is a reminder of how unlikely Em's success must have seemed prior to Slim's Shady.
75. "We All Die One Day" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z4E-CmzydU) (Obie Trice with Eminem, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo, Cheers, 2003) Mariah Ekel? Check over. Hamstring joke? That too. Threaten to stab someone? Yes, "We All Die One Day" has that and more, including a nod to "deez nutz". And we can imagine Eminem rapping a few bars of Spanish every day, if only because it's so intriguingly atypical. 74. "The Anthem" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rK2MMK_J4qQ) (Sway & King Tech featuring RZA, Tech N9ne, Eminem, Xzibit, Pharoahe Monch, Kool G Rap, Jayo Felony, Chino XL and KRS-One, This or That, 1999) By and large, Eminem has caught up with the whole "rape-rap" persona he took on in his early days, his verses to "The Anthem" by Sway and But not tech. Is. It does not reflect this maturation. However, Marshall sounds younger and hungrier than any of his fellow performers on this song, and the video is top notch, Em. Chr. 73. "Yellow Brick Road" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS9oryavqs0) (Encore , 2004) For much of Encore, Eminem seems to have lost his say: see "Puke" (#254) and "Big Weenie" (268) for a quick quiz. But now the thoughtful moments on Em's fifth LP stand out as some of his most level-headed, confident, and mature material yet, like "Yellow Brick Road," a pre-Origin story that doubles as an apology for racism. Rap ("Foolish Pride" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Chd8VzL2soY)) that he recorded in his early days and years later thanks to Benzino and then-CEO of The Source David Mays originated . "I've heard people say they heard the tape and it wasn't that bad / But it was / It highlighted a whole career and I'm sorry for that," he admits with surprising candor on Yellow Brick Road. KM 72. "My Name" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag_Rpxv0zOM) (Xzibit feat. Eminem and Nate Dogg, Man vs. Machine, 2002) When Eminem insults Canibus and Dr. Xzibit was busy fighting with Jermaine Dupri (remember the non-conflict?) and Xzibit decided to go with "My Name," a powerful snippet from his LP Man vs. Machine backed by Nate Dogg and a few guest verses from Em, who can't help but spread the ire. He hurls insults at both Canibus and Dupri, then closes the trail by summoning none other than Nas. KM 71. "Say Goodbye Hollywood" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5RFhgkFzcw) (The Eminem Show, 2002) This Eminem Show favorite was one of the first, if not the first, titles to release became A
A truly overwhelmed Marshall Mathers takes the spotlight. After being charged with concealed weapons, is steeped in personal and legal drama. Em doesn't spit venom on overzealous fans here, nor wish he could use a chainsaw on journalists; Instead, he's genuinely worried about the pressure he's under and realizes that maybe for the first time in his life he has something to lose. On later records, Eminem considered stepping away from fame and the rap business, but this song marked a turning point when he seriously considered saying goodbye. KM 70. "Seduction" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxR9ZAoG7fA) (Recovery, 2010) At first glance, "Seduction" seems like a boast about having stone coldly stolen another man's girlfriend, but it's more carefully revealing a clever metaphor for Em's return to hip-hop dominance in the spirit of Commons "I Used to Love H.E.R." CJ 69. "Welcome to D-Block" (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Y0YaHYaoAUw) (Jadakiss feat. The LOX and Eminem, Kiss of Death, 2004) One of the highlights of the second Jadakiss In the year of the Kiss of Death album, "Welcome to DBlock" reunited Kiss with his LOX compatriots and did teams up with Eminem, who pounces on the Kiss-native Yonkers in the second verse, cracking marathon Diddy jokes and connecting G-Unit shoes. CJ 68. "3 am" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAuo8IOFNuE) (Relapse, 2009) There are some awkward rhymes in "3 a.m." ("Coroner" and "Coroner" wouldn't have that best of Eminem), but Em's subtle accents and pacing keep the song on track. Sometimes its darkness threatens to overshadow the brighter moments, but the Dr. Dre's direction and Marshall's yell "The Silence of the Lambs" in the third act keep this film grounded. 67. "Off the Wall" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRe6RaunaS0) (Eminem and Redman, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps [Original Soundtrack], 2000) By far the best thing ever released Professor Nutty II: The Klumps. KM 66. "Roman's Revenge" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1jl-d0uM7M) (Nicki Minaj feat. Eminem, Pink Friday, 2010) "Roman's Revenge" is probably best rated as a KO. known. Nicki's second round player. against Lil Kim, but two deft verses from Em capture the wild glee of the attack, which leaves Kim alone to rampage at his favorite subgroup: haters. Fun Fact: An earlier version of the song contained a chorus that quoted West Side Story's "I Feel Pretty" instead of Busta Rhymes' "Scenario" verse. cj
65. "Square Dance" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0kjCwOFIXQ) (The Eminem Show, 2002) The slightly awkward, audience-friendly "Square Dance" throws punches at Dubya ("Yeah, the man's got His Back / With a Plan to Raid This Bush Administration"), includes a quick dismissal from Canibus ("Can I-I-Bitch I don't want trouble with Slim / Nooooo?"), and still finds room for a lot tight rhymes, just for the sake of it ("Psychotic, hypnotic product / Got it / The antibiotic / Ain't nobody sexier / And so on / And blah blah"). So, yes, we're ready to look beyond the over-the-top Southern attitude Em takes on in the chorus ("Don't Rush It / Cuz thur ain't nuttin' to wurry 'bout"). K.M. 64. "You Don' t Know" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngH0fkiNog&list=UU20vb-R_px4CguHzzBPhoyQ) feat. 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and Cashis (Eminem Presents: The Re-Up, 2006) It's almost depressing to be 50 Hearing Cent and Eminem at the peak of their lyrical game on "You Don't Know" because if anything, it's easy to remember This time eventually brings out the best in us all. But get over it, because Eminem is getting pretty good here "It's not fake shit, it's friendship," he teases, adding the final nail in every other rapper's coffin: "My nemesis is his nemesis." Chr. 63. "Gatman & Robbin'" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30Qrzfg3FJs) (50 Cent feat. Eminem, The Massacre, 2005) Eminem and 50 Cent have great chemistry, even if they don't. really exhausting, as seen in The Massacre's "Gatman and Robbin'" where our fiendish duo unleashes a barrage of violent threats during the superhero theme song. Unless the sight of 50 heists in a comic book Gatmobile is your idea of a good time, stay away from the video. CJ 62. Beautiful (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgT1AidzRWM&index=32&list=UU20vb-R_px4CguHzzBPhoyQ) (Relapse, 2009) Towards the end of Relapse, Eminem abandons the psycho killer gimmick and instead opens "Get Ready “. for "Beautiful," a six-minute self-analysis and slow-burning power ballad fueled by a sample from 1996's "Reaching Out" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXo4CzSU-ss ). -Off-supergroup Rock Therapy, who shimmered their life-changing hit in a spark longing to escape Slim Shady's shadow. KM 61. "Rush Ya Clique" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFgmfOYuKzQ) (Outsidaz feat. Eminem, Night Life, 2000) Unfortunately, Eminem's affiliation with the Newark, NJ Outsidaz crew yielded more
There were more applause than collaborations before they exploded, but "Rush Ya Clique" from Outz's debut EP Night Life proved that the coming together of Em, Pacewon, Young Zee and co. was impressive. Lauryn Hill's accidental shot at the end of Em's verse is standard for him, but odd for her since Hill's Fugees gave Outsidaz some time for The Score's "Cowboys" a few years earlier. CJ 60. "Rabbit Run" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN8VWkdRpmw) (Music by and inspired by the film 8 Mile, 2002) This is EM at its best: looking inward, taking stock his possibilities and unleashes his fury in skillfully controlled outbursts. Both the bravado and urgency are there ("You'll feel my feelings / If you don't feel it, then it must be too real to touch"), but it's both fiery and measured for a change. Chr. 59. "Without Me" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVkUvmDQ3HY) (The Eminem Show, 2002) How to start the lead single of your third great album: Obie Trice fake-out , "Buffalo Gals" faux sing-along and the Shady-as-Batman theme song, all within the first 30 seconds. It's difficult to fit another four minutes into that running time, but "Without Me" mostly pulls it off, as it features some of Em's most memorable and verbally adept spinning hooks ("So the FCC won't let me be/ Or let me be me...") and myth-making ("I'm the worst since Elvis Presley..."). By the end of the song, Slim is understandably too tired to do anything but yell "kids!" and keep the rhythm going for another half minute. ANDREW UNTERBERGER 58. "The Last Hit" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTa7hs_KEGk) (The High & Mighty feat. Eminem, Home Field Advantage, 1999) For their 1999 debut album, the duo Philadelphia's The High & Mighty (aka Mr. Eon and DJ Might Mi) turned to a young, hungry, wacky Detroit MC to contribute a handful of guest verses. If you were hoping to fill The Last Hit with bars about throwing acid, spraying bullets, stealing microphones, and disposing of corpses, then the boy didn't disappoint. KM 57. "Busa Rhyme" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrC-IXxCQ60) (Missy Elliott feat. Eminem, Da Real World, 1999) "Busa Rhyme", from Missy Elliott's second album, "Da Real World" is a rarity in that its celebrity star gets a verse from all three from its guest, but it's also notable for being one of only two existing collaborations between Eminem and Timbaland. It's a shame they didn't work together more; Em's springy flow and Tim's pinball production go together beautifully. cj
56. "Murder, Murder" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKKUn3RQktc) (The Slim Shady EP, 1997) This somber gem sampling 2Pac from the Slim Shady EP proves it's in Eminem's World Violence doesn't always have to be cartoonish, gory, or full of anger. Sometimes blood is spilled out of simple, lonely desperation. KM 55. "Infinite" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ3n10KLVq0) (Infinite, 1996) The title track to Eminem's little-heard 1996 debut album, Infinite, is a minor record, but if-ifs if you listen carefully, there are clues as to the career he would pursue. Em hadn't quite developed her signature style yet, but some key elements are already there: the allure of hell, the impressive inner rhyme schemes, the references to murder and STDs. And then there's the titular promise: "I am infinite." It must have sounded like hip-hop's necessary bravado at the time; But now, almost 20 years later, it sounds like self-evident truth, coming from someone who knows they are destined to be great. He's just waiting for everyone else to catch up. KM 54. "I'm Shady" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLF3icfD8yU) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) The quasi-title track from The Slim Shady LP, "I'm Shady" . It might be the friendliest look Eminem's murderous, joking alter ego has ever thrown on a record. Other than that, he's been writing his biggest fan a fuck-you letter, shooting around the playground, telling AIDS jokes, and dealing drugs. But for the record, Shady takes pills, doesn't take speed, doesn't take crack, doesn't take coke, smokes weed, doesn't take smack, takes shrooms, drinks beer, and makes one thing clear: at this stage in his production, even Em's deep cuts are classic. KM 53. "Rhyme or Reason" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBQXgNRQDak) (The Marshall Mathers LP 2, 2013) Even the prettiest track to sneak into MMLP2 has its dark side . Eminem continues to harbor a hateful grudge against his absent father and indulge in nihilism on "Rhyme or Reason": "There's no rhyme or reason at all," says the chorus, but he softens the song's prickliness by making clever use of fed zombies. Sample. KM 52. "Under the Influence" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTLe4ZIdkCU) feat. D12 (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) D12's first appearance on an Eminem album and still one of his best posse cuts, with all six members vying for the most crappy honors by scoring goals in Stop the Violence rallies shoot, breed pit bulls and throw straight into the microphone. "Scary Movies" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hyWRYyodgY) (Bad Meets Evil, single "Nuttin' To Do", 1999) The B-side (and possibly the Louder cut ) from the first "Bad Meets Evil" meetup notes that the two rappers sound massive when playing slashers over a beat cinematic enough to be Wes Craven-worthy. The obvious obsolescence of quoting Scream's catchphrase in the intro, not to mention all the Clinton/Lewinsky stuff in Em's verse, is made even more so by the beautiful Alchemist-style Shirley Bassey sample that drives the song and ironically is one of them than made up for by productions least committed to the horror core of Slim's early years. AU 50. "Still Don't Give a Fuck" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEQi87xSIgU) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) As if that wasn't enough to rank him as one of the best After Eminem recorded a few tracks on his hit album Just Don't Give a Fuck, he added a follow-up to the end of the LP, The Slim Shady, to underscore his point: Still Don't Give a fuck". Though not quite as strong as its predecessor, the sequel is a real winner's lap, with a middle finger raised at the conclusion of Em's sophomore year and one of his best murderous rhymes: "How the hell am I?" Shall I get out of debt? / I can't rap anymore / I just murdered the alphabet." K.M. 49. "Bad Influence" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH-RjRU32Dc) (End of Days [Original Soundtrack], 1999) Eminem's favorite rap subject is disgruntled parents' scorn at his rudeness, and the End of Days soundtrack "Bad Influence" is throat-throbbing. Em pokes fun at overblown notions about his influence on his younger listeners, and perhaps touches on some of them. The message of "Who Knew" comes just a hair's breadth too close to being suitable for inclusion on The Marshall Mathers LP proper . CJ 48. "Crack a Bottle" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHA4f5qrVmk) (Relapse , 2009) It seems absurd that Relapse's lead single "Crack a Bottle" is officially one of only two
released Dre, Em and 50 Collaborations (excluding Encore and the Syllables leak). It's a perfect representation of the oddly multi-regional nature of the Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit connection, a key precursor to today's industriously inclusive rap teams. CJ 47. "If I Get Locked Up" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y19pEpdW0JM) (Funkmaster Flex and Big Kap feat. Dr. Dre and Eminem, The Tunnel, 1999) The Forgotten Tunnel of Funkmaster Flex The album hosts one of Eminem's great non-album edits. "If I Get Locked Up" is pure Slim Shady-era battle rap trash talk, with flat beats from Dr. Dre and hefty strings and horns from Redman and Def Squad partner Rockwilder. CJ 46. "8 Mile" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDbpde3y2Jc) (Music from and inspired by the film 8 Mile, 2002) "8 Mile" apparently tells the same story as "Lose You" . "Myself" and the latter earned Eminem the Oscar, but the former also deserves some credit. Named after the Hollywood adaptation of Marshall Mathers' life story, the song weaves a narrative thread that contrasts with its more well-known companion. The finer, well-drawn details, like the little sister, unaware of the domestic wasteland around her, which she colors in with a crayon until it wears out in her hand, are particularly polished, and the scope also diverges. In this six-minute soundtrack cut, Em's screenmate dreams of being on stage and finding success as a famous rapper, just like he does on "Lose Yourself," but doesn't quite make it. For now, all you have to do is get off the 8 Mile Road. KM 45. "Don't Approach Me" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBrBFizikvA) (Xzibit feat. Eminem, Restless, 2000) The most important takeaway from this collaboration between Eminem and Xzibit? These guys value their privacy, so stay away from them or they won't get too close to you. Sounds like the same old bending, tapping and waving the gun you say? It may be, but Em and X's relationship amplifies this restless knockout. KM 44. "Fast Lane" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJOsjP33nF4) (Bad Meets Evil, Hell: The Sequel, 2011) The cold war between Eminem and Royce of 5'9" lasted decade, but Bad Meets Evil's 2011 reunion single "Fast Lane" fulfilled the duo's latent promise so easily that it seems like there never was a breakup, Em and Royce fought and proved they were equals 43. "Encore/Curtains Down" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZfCeYJCQO0) with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent (Encore, 2004)
I wish Eminem could resist the urge to overload his albums with maybe 20 tracks. Remove the Encore skits, remove a handful of duds (check out the 150-200 values on this list for a few candidates), and the rattling "Encore/Curtains Down" might have been a powerhouse, the lean-and -Reign is approaching. record. Instead, it's a strong, star-studded conclusion (Dr. Dre and 50 Cent contribute guest verses) to Em's first major misstep. (His promise in 2004 that Dre's unreleased Detox would be out soon makes that landing harder than it needs to be.) 42. "As the World Turns" (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=31HNTfiZtNg) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) As the world turns, Slim spreads like germs and commits all kinds of wickedness in his clothes. as WKRP in Cincinnati DJ. Em's particular brand of soap opera wouldn't go down well with daytime audiences, as the "little obstacles and challenges" that constitute his daily toils include having victims of attempted assault beat them up and eat his legs before he rapes him. Kill them with your Go-Go Gadget Dick. About a million times more nauseous than ABC's traditional 2-hour block, but far more entertaining and definitely less predictable. AU 41. "Purple Pills" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uuq6HgKgEFQ) (D12, Devil's Night, 2001) One of the most narcoleptic jams ever, with a lurching hook about to transition End of each bar and a bridge that basically ends with Eminem falling asleep on the keyboard. Fascinating stuff and hardly unsuitable for a solo (and group) taking on as many different types of narcotics as the single release (https://west.exch030.serverdata.net/owa/redir.aspx?C=NA_gPMe0DUe9G-
Basically, dxMiblWYwt8ZrhwdEIjQvbS6f4UMoAVj0j2e7mhpg13B0YExKLfo3nAqEOLOU.&URL=https%3a%2f%2f had to turn this into a completely different (though actually no less disturbing) song. Even Bubba Sparxxx would never have dreamed of such a funky harmonica. AU 40. "Drug Ballad" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk2YNFC9sAA) feat. Dina Rae (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) Played on piano and backed by Dina Rae, this fan favorite portends inevitable dark days and plenty of hangovers; Actually, Drug Ballad is the unknown prequel to Relapse and Recovery, but it's great fun that's inherently high while it lasts. KM 39. "Soldier" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxvaJbDgDEY) (The Eminem Show, 2002) Violence is a constant in Eminem's music, but "Soldier" is different. Recorded after Em
Though two gun possession charges have been filed (one for pointing a gun at a rival MC and one for pistol whipping against a man he caught kissing Kim), the Eminem show dip revels in the real danger the same zeal for the fantastic as other songs in Em's catalogue. , imaginary bloodshed. 2Pac's wink in verse three is shockingly spot on. CJ 38. "Say What You Say" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFeyBYkTEB4) feat. dr Dre (The Eminem Show, 2002) Jermaine Dupri, on the other hand, stirred things up when he badmouthed Dre and Timbaland in an interview with XXL. Em and Dre hit back with "Say What You Say" from The Eminem Show and as usual Em was a little happy and fired shots at his mother, Canibus and The Source for fun. CJ 37. "Bitch Please II" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mS3w68qaNx0) feat. dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit and Nate Dogg (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) How do you create a worthy sequel to a Snoop Dogg track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBMaYLrl3mU) that has been featured? Nate Dogg and Xzibit? Reassemble the original cast, add Dr. Add Dre and Eminem to the squad and then return. KM 36. "Déjà Vu" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UnNRFt2iqw) (Relapse, 2009) "Déjà Vu", a portrait of the artist as an addict, comes too late for Relapse: shocking for the Records comes to life in the last quarter, but the deceptively powerful title is actually the heart of the album. As a descending rhythm repeats itself endlessly, Eminem himself circles the drain, detailing the real-life throwback that is the title of his sixth LP. She accommodates his habits and appetites (Nyquil, Valium, and Vicodin are some of her favorite substances), admits Proof's shooting death in 2006 exacerbated her spiral, and admits they suffered a near-fatal overdose in 2007 has. But Em never missed her fault. The person Marshall blames for his relapse is the same person he's trying to get away from: himself. KM 35. "Business" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6J_vbXyx-Y) ( The Eminem Show, 2002) Eminem conveys the Batman and Robin dynamic from the Without Me video for the Business. "which sounds like a siren is the closest thing to a real hit on The Eminem Show. On previous attempts, Em would have sullied this type of track with moaning puns ("Cum on Everybody") or brazen misogyny ("Drug Ballad"), but here she keeps those urges (mostly) in check. Why this was only released as a single in the UK is beyond us. KM
34. "The Kids" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=315mwrWQcVU) (The Marshall Mathers LP [Clean Version], 2000) He learns his lessons from "Drug Ballad" and "My Fault", Eminem decides to educate a class of boys about "The Children" and tells them the stories of Bob, a psychopath who enjoys hitting strange women and smoking weed, and Zach, a weak-willed 21-year-old who succumbs to peer pressure and... finally , also a lot of ecstasy. He also warns young people about the dangers of eating "mushrooms" (read: magic mushrooms), but doesn't mention the "Susan the Ex-Heroin Maniac" story from The Slim Shady LP, probably for the better. Too bad he didn't omit those ultra-modern South Park imitations either, but we're leaving him aside for this Marshall Mathers-era oddity. KM 33. "Sing for the Moment" (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=D4hAVemuQXY) (The Eminem Show, 2002) "Sing for the Moment" borrows a large part from Aerosmith's classic "Dream On" . and matches the stressed-out, teenage boredom of Steven Tyler and co., once again going after critics and critics who claim Em's music leads fans to something other than comfort and escape. CJ 32. "Dead Wrong" (https: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=44bV8td2Wew) (The Notorious B.I.G. feat. Eminem, Born Again, 1999) Eminem and Biggie never met in real life, but that doesn't remove "Dead Wrong," a Single from the posthumous B.I.G. Album "Born Again" - Considered one of the best songs released by any MC Biggie's performance is usually impeccable but Em takes the song from him in the third verse with an occult tour de force that ends in a bloodbath C.J. 31. "Stimulate" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIphm_WMNO4) (Music from and inspired by the film 8 Mile [Special Edition], 2002) An underrated b-side from the Eminem show era, "Stimulate" is notable for its uncharacteristically psychedelic chorus, overwhelmed by a massive guitar roll and the masked Em singing backwards under his own chorus, and for what is arguably the only hint in the hip -Hop story on the solo career of former Take This singer, Robbie Williams. Its lyrics aren't quite as hard-edged as most em hits of the era, so it's no surprise that they mostly stayed under the radar, but it's a forgotten song that's worth discovering. AU 30. "Marshall Mathers" (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=z3oomyWRToQ) (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) Some of the references may seem dated now: the guitar solo has faded, the takes are carried over
on 'NSync, Britney Spears, and $16 CDs, but feelings of outrage, betrayal, and petulance, please give me a reason, are cornerstones of the Eminem mythos. KM 29. "Bad Meets Evil" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sGUFY_4910) feat. Royce da 5'9" (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) That's what happens when evil (Eminem) meets evil (Royce da 5'9"): a spaghetti western flavor that leaves no survivors and the seed a two man sows side project. KM 28. "Do You Remember Me?" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXpzIrDK8uU) feat. RBX and Sticky Fingaz (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) "Remember Me?" It's the only time another rapper gets the best of Eminem on The Marshall Mathers LP. The guest list is unusual: Dre's old partner RBX (known for his ads in The Chronic) and Onyx's Sticky Fingaz show up to deliver guttural, punchy raps, and Em, who stole the song so it wouldn't get recorded. on Dre's 2001 album, you can't get the best of Sticky. The slant of competition and the cold purity of its mindless violence make it one of the best albums of Em's career. CJ 27. "Role Model" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubEublECnMU&list=UU20vb-R_px4CguHzzBPhoyQ&index=30) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) The '90s was the decade of "I Am Not a Role." “. Model," which is one of a thousand or more reasons why it was so chilling for American Midwest when Eminem showed up with a bloodied knife in one hand and a bag of mushrooms in the other around the turn of the millennium and asked "Don." , don't you wanna be like me?” Marshall certainly wasn't impressed by the statement tracks of his early albums, but “Role Model” certainly ranks among his most unequivocal, tainting the memory of Sonny Bono, his mother with a shovel hits his head and puts an end to it all. He tied a rope around his tail and jumped out of a tree. The parents fought admirably to keep their sons on the right track, but to no avail: a year later, Slim had assembled an entire army (https://west.exch030.serverdata.net/owa/redir.aspx?C=NA_gPMe0DUe9G -

"Like Toy Soldiers" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lexLAjh8fPA&list=UU20vb-R_px4CguHzzBPhoyQ) (Encore, 2004) Proof's death marked a difficult time for Em's camp and "Like Encore's Toy Soldiers" pauses to reflect on Marshall's concerns about rap meat encroaching on his personal life, and wonders aloud whether the destructive tactics he used on his friends' enemies are worth it.
the compromised security it brought them. Realizing that wars only breed more wars, "Like Toy Soldiers" marks a turning point in a career rife with legendary tracks; He kept harassing people he didn't like, but from then on he chose his targets much more carefully. CJ 25. "Guilty Conscience" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meXzynCCT0I) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) Meet Marshall, 26 years old. Fed up with life and the way things are, he decides to adopt two alter egos: one is Eminem, a rapper, and the other is Slim Shady, a troubled psychopath who advocates armed robbery, drug use, rape, and so on Murder is the Good Angel's Bad Angel by Dr. Dre and the eternal scapegoat for anything sick or twisted that comes out of Marshall's or Eminem's mouth. His conscience never comes into play, so don't listen to Slim, he's bad for you. KM 24. "White America"(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZIzD0ZfTFg) (The Eminem Show, 2002) When "White America" was released in May 2002, my worst parental nightmare was real become. : Eminem was one of the most talked about and ubiquitous forces in pop culture, a fact he was happy to remind her of with the aforementioned song. Despite the now-obsolete mention of TRL in the chorus, the actual opening track of The Eminem Show lives on, thanks to Em's tireless performance, who insists on recognizing it as nothing short of an important statement. KM 23. "Patiently Waiting" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2G-GCjhIGo) (50 Cent feat. Eminem, Get Rich or Die Tryin', 2003) Talks about the scale of achievements in 50 Cent's major-label debut "Get Rich Or Die Tryin' That" and driving anthem "Patiently Waiting" were never released as singles. It's Em and 50's best performance as a couple, full of the joyful levity and pop savvy that made Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit's reign of terror such a unique moment in rap history. CJ 22. "Brain Damage" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8F8RkPaQNM) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) "Brain Damage" is a glimpse into Em's uncomfortable childhood, detailing events that are just as real how real are imaginary. , incredulous that a "skinny and always cranky" head could have become a rap phenomenon. Forgotten Fact: D'angelo Bailey, the thug in verse two, tried a libel suit in 2001 and lost the case by a judge's duly pronounced verdict in the form of a rap verse. cj
21. "Who Knew" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSLZSQTADfU) (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) In which the kids asked Em before an album if they wanted to be like him, replies he flatly, "Yes," much to his parents' dismay, and the rapper shrugs and decides to cave in once more. In the event that some of his lyrical offenses have previously eluded the PMRC contingent (homophobia, beating his wife, as well as attempts to prematurely kill Sonny Bono), Marshall makes sure to present them here in order to aid cataloguing ease, and challenges those with ruffled feathers to focus on actual parenting, or at least "have a sense of humor." Eminem's lifelong refusal to compromise despite better judgment may have had a detrimental effect on his track records and certainly his character, but it makes for an exceptionally engaging listening experience, nowhere more so than on "Who Knew." AU 20. "What's the Difference" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PANEcjhSfv4) (Dr. Dre feat. Eminem and Xzibit, 2001, 1999) Dre discusses the disturbing deterioration in his friendship with DJ Yella, Eazy-E and the D.O.C. after N.W.A in this 2001 version, but before things get too dark, Xzibit and Em show up for some comical relief. It's conceptually incoherent, but also immaculately rapped and blessed with Dre's inimitable combination of expert sample selection and tasteful orchestration. CJ 19. "Any Man" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6Lg0EDz8QE) (Rawkus Presents Soundbombing II, 1999) Before his deal with Aftermath, there were rumors that Eminem was interested in working with the venerable rap be an indie duck. Down and Rawkus. He reunited with Duck Down's Buckshot and Dru Ha and appeared on Rawkus Records' Soundbombing II compilation with Any Man, a flawless slice of stoned ferocity delivered via the production of longtime Buckshot collaborator Da Beatminerz and memorably cuts into the third stanza Em says her daughter crossed out the last line of her rhyme book. CJ 18. "Criminal" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdrk3MzgO6g) (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) The final track of Eminem's career-defining work, "Criminal" is Eminem's crowning achievement. His character from Dennis the Menace wielding a machete. Em delights in wreaking havoc with a sharp piano beat, goading his critics with some of his most homophobic lyrics, robbing a bank and blowing up an ATM for fun ("Thanks!"), and explaining what a sick joke that is Slim Shady's heart: "Shit, half the shit I/I say
Just make it up / To piss you off / So kiss my bare white ass.” And how does this confession immediately follow? "And if he ain't a rapper, I'll do it like / I'm a f***ing rapist in a Jason mask." K.M. 17. The Way I Am (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQvteoFiMlg) (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000), after Eminem delivered his third album to Interscope Records earlier in his year 2000 the label felt it lacked an accessible lead single, so Jimmy Iovine, one of the company's co-founders and then-CEO, asked Em to write another song like his 1999 hit "My Name Is." Interscope got "what" instead. "The Way I Am," a fiery fuck aimed at record executives, journalists, and even Eminem's own fans. Accompanied by dramatic chimes and sizzling tape effects, the track features Mathers' sharpest performance of all time. On the mic while responding to the pressures and expectations placed on him with gnashing intensity, the desire to die or be fired from his record deal and attacking the people who linger on the fringes of his life. No, it wasn't exactly the kind of radio-ready jingle Iovine had in mind, but "The Way I Am" ended up on The Marshall Mathers LP and, incredibly, was released as a single after "The Real Slim Shady". ", the hilarious beginning of the record that Eminem wrote after he burned "The Way I Am." KM 16. "Rap God" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbGs_qK2PQA) (The Marshall Mathers LP 2, 2013) Not really a hook, a six minute four second run. Time, a peak position of No. 7 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and 1,560 words total, enough for Eminem to set a world record for "Most Words in a Hit Single". (http://www.spin.com/articles/eminem-rap-godmost-words-guinness-book-world-records-metallica-shakira-katy-perry/) This was a numerical analysis of “Rap God. KM 15. "The Real Slim Shady" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp6mXmHNPLg) (LP by The Marshall Mathers, 2000) "My Name Is" was the song that made Eminem a star, but "The Real Slim Shady" was the song that made Eminem a phenomenon, and while it's inseparable from his cultural moment — the spring and summer of 2000, when Carson Daly, Christina Aguilera, and Fred Durst were regularly singing together (and in sentences ) appeared on TV ) - MMLP's first single is still considered a pop mainstay, ridiculous but ultimately harmless G-funk that helped one man assemble an army of blonde demons. KM
14. "I'm Back" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2J9F2sJMT4) (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) "I kill a rhyme word for word / You ain't heard of a ghost , who's as perverted as mine..." Nestled midway through the LP, "The Marshall Mathers" is one of the finest vocal performances of Em's career. The wordplay in the first verse of "I'm Back" is great, but it's the deft subject change, the quick switch from insane radio terrorist to sad boy Marshall and back to still unhappy Eminem that sets this song apart from the rest Pack. CJ 13. "Rock Bottom" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgBW2pevRhE) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) Listening to "Rock Bottom" now, the most enchanting element of the track isn't the spooky one Sample of "Summertime" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A24JZkgvNv4) by Big Brother and the Holding Company (although that's close); Eminem sounds so beat and exhausted. Before his relapse and recovery, before his high-profile feuds and two divorces, before "The Real Slim Shady," Marshall Mathers was, like many people, a husband and father struggling to provide for his family, a self-proclaimed force of nerves, that busted his ass and broke his heart for getting his butt checked, that he felt his best days were behind him and his worst would never end, that he dreamed of breaking the law and other pains inflict not to hold on to his throne but to cut out even the smallest part of the kingdom. KM 12. "Just Don't Give a Fuck" (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=mWjaaAibq6E) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) Written in dire straits as Em struggles to have a new son A rap career that seems to be coming to an end, "Just Don't Give a Fuck" tells of a grim descent into substance abuse. Also, the plan for the next five years of Slim Shady's dissident wars is laid out: Verse two calls out five white rappers in two lines and warns rap magazines they can get it too as the Em's Source war rages on. That would quickly prove true. . CJ 11. "Lose Yourself" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmXumtgwtak) (Music by and inspired by the film 8 Mile, 2002) 8 Mile was a quality concept that has yet to be copied: a rapper at the peak of his powers, playing himself in the story of his rise to power. It's everything Cool As Ice wanted to be but couldn't. The soundtrack received the first Oscar for Best Original Song ever awarded to a hip-hop act. That's thanks to "Lose Yourself," Eminem's quintessential empowerment anthem. It's a cool combination of hip-hop attitude and rockin' swagger, a motivational message of empowerment born from adversity, and the entire experience of Eminem in a single knockout. cj
10. "Kim" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcUgsvpchms) (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) Almost 15 years after its release, "Kim" remains a chilling and uncompromising work. As a song, it's a punishing listen: a gruesome six-minute murder fantasy starring a deranged Eminem as the killer and his then-wife (now twice ex-wife) as his victim. Emotional and psychological bloodshed ensues as part of the storytelling, the most focused and immersive narrative Marshall Mathers has recorded to date. A horror film that needs no visual elements, Kim depicts the end of a marriage, follows a man's descent into insanity, and ends with no music, just the sound of a body being dragged through reeds while cars loom in the distance pass on the street. adjacent street just before a trunk slams shut. KM 9. "Renegade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OVNXTkV414) (Jay Z feat. Eminem, The Blueprint, 2001) Even though Eminem never equaled and sustained his own success and was the only one to land on a real cameo on Jay Z's The Blueprint would have earned him bragging rights for life. Hova's 2001 LP was the moment that cemented his current role as King of New York; It's a virtually flawless full-length blockbuster, arguably the best hip-hop record of the 21st century, and for a few moments Em steals the limelight from his star. (He also provided Jay with the track originally recorded as a collaboration between Eminem and Royce da 5'9" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_mEyX5I-uU) which Jay replaced Z for this version.) Here's a bold but true statement: The Detroit rapper's flow has never been better or more natural than in his two verses from "Renegade." seedy as Satan's Little Helper is discussed and spent with amazing frugality and ease ("Look, it's dead easy as easy as whistle like 'Dixie' / While I'm pointing that gun at 60 Christians at me... Motherfuckers hate to like me / What, what have I done?") PostMarshall Mathers LP and Pre-Eminem Show, this is Eminem at the peak of his powers, a snapshot of a gutter kid making butter out of bloodsuckers 8. "Cleanin' Out My Closet" (https :/ /www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ9_TKayu9s) (The Eminem Show, 2002) A sore sore with a backing track, "Cleanin' Out My Closet" features a subtle but effective arrangement: a simple snare drum, muted Electric guitar, sad strings in the chorus and a sparkling key hook all around. However, this is also one of the most personal, painful and uncomfortable listening experiences in Eminem's catalogue. The second single from The Eminem Show, "Closet," begins with Em responding to her critics and describing herself as a victim of hate and discrimination. Verses two and three talk about the Mathers family tree with the ax while Marshall curses and
He wishes for his father's death, reflects on the broken marriage, scolds his own mother for abusing him as a child, and claims that he is a victim of Munchausen Syndrome (http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/M%C3%BCchausen_Syndrome). Eminem had covered much of this territory before, but never with such open fury and such intimate detail. She's since shared a song apologizing to her mom for exposing their dysfunctional relationship, but that doesn't make "Cleanin' Out My Closet" any less devastating. And the video of Em digging a grave in the rain hasn't softened either. KM 7. "If I Had" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQd9ndcpAGk) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) Stressed, depressed and broke, Marshall lists his life circumstances and was fed up with himself before pondering what he would do if he ever became a millionaire in the chorus, in a subtle twist on the Barenaked Ladies song "If I Had $1,000,000" from a few years earlier. We all know the rest of the story: international fame, recognition and tons of millions. Em doesn't make records like "If I Had" anymore because he can't. His fear of starvation is long overdue. CJ 6. "Stan" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOMhN-hfMtY) (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) "Stan" reveals that the parents and Eminem share the same fear: that most Die Em - hardcore fans would take anything the rapper said literally. The third track of the MMLP is divided into four stanzas and stretches over almost seven minutes. It tells the story of an obsessive who gets too attached to the macabre in Marshall Mathers' work and ends up acting out the kind of murder-suicide fantasy that Slim Shady had he would write with a laugh and say, "I'm just doing Bullshit, America.” Aided by a sample of Dido's “Thank You” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TO48Cnl66w) and a flurry of storm effects, “Stan” unfolds as a letter narrative that lets you , Marshall to play the role of the person in charge. Artist (note the glasses he wears towards the end of the song's sophisticated music video, a telltale sign we're dealing with some serious Eminem.) In the song's final verse, Em drops the playful psycho act and urges her biggest (and most unstable) fan to seek professional help and focus on the true relationships in her life: solid advice, even if it's late. . KM 5. "My Name Is" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNPnbI1arSE) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) Although Infinite and The Slim Shady EP preceded it, "My Name Is" did Eminem intro. for many of his listeners. The character was a real eye-catcher: a devilish character
White, intelligent, blonde rapper with a penchant for violence, a natural contempt for celebrity and a powerful history of family trauma. "My Name Is" showcased all of these facets, introducing an unsuspecting audience to a wildly unusual character with an infectious dre beat and a calculatedly absurd video treatment. His mother was so furious with his performance that she sued her son, then wrote a rap speech and spilled the beans. CJ 4. "'Till I Collapse" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwDmUrlU58E) (The Eminem Show, 2002) "'Till I Collapse" from The Eminem Show does everything that "Lose Yourself " means. Months later, but Nate Dogg didn't appear on Lose Yourself. CJ 3. "'97 Bonnie & Clyde" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdjBDtn1es0) (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) Originally included on The Slim Shady EP with a different musical arrangement and title, "'97 Bonnie & Clyde" was re-recorded and carried over to Eminem's first major release, The Slim Shady LP. An R-rated bedtime story, the song follows Eminem immediately following the events of Kim, which was recorded as a prequel to The Marshall Mathers LP. In this clue, Em must dispose of his murdered wife's body and explain to his daughter why her mother isn't coming home with them. Of all the different sides of Eminem — Em the rapper, Slim the identity, Marshall the son, Marshall the husband — none is more intriguing than Marshall, the father who loves his baby dearly and would do anything to make it happen to raise. . as he sees fit, even if it means Slim Shady has to steal his mother. Design-wise, Kim covers much of the same territory with much more graphic detail, but '97 Bonnie & Clyde (formerly known as Just The Two of Us) plays on the lunatic/dad dichotomy, which, like I know fans are crucial. Formerly Eminem. KM 2. "Kill You" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brS8KxkgE_I) (The Marshall Mathers LP, 2000) The actual lead track from Eminem's classic The Marshall Mathers LP is a daring response to criticism of his lyrical content. Em has been accused of promoting misogyny, drug addiction and violence in his music. He kicks things up a notch at the start of his best album, singing bloodthirsty verses that will blow your mind and warning anyone who hears the chorus, "You don't wanna fuck ." . with Shady / Because Shady's Gonna Kill You." It is Russian roulette. No living rapper has dared to try it since. C.J. 1. "Forgot About Dre" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= QFcv5Ma8u8k ) (Dr. Dre feat. Eminem, 2001 , 1999) Yes, a guest verse Pause the outrage for a moment to think about it first: Eminem
The cameo on "Forgot About Dre" is probably the most well-known verse of his career, and even if I were to cite "The Real Slim Shady," "My Name Is," or "Without Me" as evidence, the opposite. , "Forgot About Dre" doesn't bump into dated names like the other tracks. And like any blockbuster single, “Dre” feels committed to its time, but isn't marred by its turn-of-the-century release date; It's the kind of song that people can feel nostalgic about and still enjoy in the moment. In pop style, this is Eminem at his most likable: if you stood near a radio in 2000, the phrase "hotter than a pair of twins" is still burned into your brain. (And if you're Chris Pratt (http://www.spin.com/articles/chris-pratt-raps-eminem-dr-dre-guardians-ofthe-galaxy-video/) you've retained a lot more than that. ) Let's put it this way: Even the people who find Eminem gross, offensive and annoying could be behind Forgot About Dre. He still has his violent tendencies - he'll strangle a guy just for looking at him awkwardly, then burn with Dr compiled by Dre. And looking back, Eminem noticed that trait just when he was at his peak, when he wasn't completely immersed in controversy or apologizing for entire albums. Forgot About Dre could put Eminem in his place when he was relatively still on the rise between The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP. What could be more exciting than that? KM
